Budget Closes 14 Shops With 48 Hours Notice

22 October 2009: Swedish owned Budget Travel told union leaders today it would close 14 of its shops in the Republic on Saturday afternoon.

One in three of the 75 staff being laid off would not get any redundancy money because it could not afford to pay them, it told the TSSA travel union.

Budget is part of the Malmo based Primera Travel group which last year turned over 850 million euros.

All staff who have worked for them for less than two years will get nothing. The rest will get the state minimum payment of two weeks for every year and 60% of that figure will be paid by the state.

The shops that will close are: Athlone, Clonmel, Cork, Dundalk, Ennis, Finglas (Dublin), Liffey Street (Dublin), Limerick, Mullingar, Northside (Dublin), Swords (Dublin), Tralee, Walkinstown (Dublin) and Waterford.

Manuel Cortes, union assistant general secretary, accused the company of taking part in "sham neogitations" in which it has not moved an inch in three months.

"These people have treated their Irish workforce with contempt. They are part of a multi million pound travel giant and yet they are throwing staff onto the streets without a penny. It is a scandal."
