19 October 2009: Peace talks at Budget Travel broke down last night after the company said that 1 in 3 of the 75 facing the sack would receive no redundancy payments at all when it closes 14 of its 31 shops in the Republic.
The TSSA travel union had asked for a minimum payment of 6,000 euros for over 20 staff who had worked for the Scandanavian owned firm for less than two years.
But management insisted they would not pay them a penny and that the 55 remaining staff who had worked for them for more than two years would have staged redundancy payments based eventually around three weeks for every year of service.
But the staff would have to wait for up to six months to get their payments because that is how long the Swedish based company would have to wait to get 60% of the redundancy bill back from the Irish Government.
"This is a company which is treating its workforce disgracefully," said Manuel Cortes, union assistant general secretary.
"We shall be going back to the LRC in the morning to point out that they are planning to get rid of staff without one penny in compensation.
"Here is a company - Primera Travel - which turned over 850 million euros last year and yet it wants to put its staff on the streets without paying them one single euro. It should not beallowed in modern day Ireland."
